
Oscar F. Wiegand was born in Mexico City, Mexico on November 3, 1921 and passed away on October 14, 2001. He attended Texas A&M University for two years before serving in the United States Army, 69th Infantry Division during World War II. For his service in combat, he was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Following WWII, he returned to Mexico City where he participated in the founding of an organization for veterans and was instrumental in obtaining veterans' benefits for Mexican citizens who served in the armed services of the United States. Dr. Wiegand returned to Texas to finish his education, obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Psychology 1949, Master's degree in Physiology and Zoology 1952 and a Ph.D. in Physiology and Zoology 1957 from the University of Texas at Austin. From 1957 -1960, he taught in the Department of Pharmacology at Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas and then returned to the University of Texas as a faculty member in l961. In l962, Dr. Wiegand served as a distinguished Professor at the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara UAG and was awarded an honorary doctorate for his role in founding the Medical School at UAG. He remained a faculty member of the Zoology Department at the University of Texas at Austin until his retirement in l985. During that time, he was a mentor to his graduate students, many of whom pursued successful careers in the sciences and whom he counted as trusted friends. In retirement, Dr. Wiegand lived in Austin and San Antonio and continued his interests in research and science, while remaining passionately committed to his wife, family, former students, wonderful friends, and neighbors. He was preceded in death by his sister, Maria Elena Wiegand Najera of Mexico City. Dr. Wiegand is survived by his wife of 52 years, Almedia Nesbit Wiegand; his sister, Dora Wiegand Bagge of San Antonio; his brother, Wilfred E. Wiegand of Mexico City; and his wife's mother, Winifred Small Nesbit; sons, Marc F. Wiegand and his wife Debbie, Paul B. Wiegand and his wife Kate, Tobin L. Wiegand and his wife Laura; daughters, Kristan W. Dixon and her husband Tom, Jan W. Haynes and her husband Ron; and grandchildren Emily, Austin, Meredyth, Jon, Julia, Kerry, Lauren, Josh, Christopher, Zach, Timothy; and numerous nieces and nephews.
