Mrs. Patricia Anne Unger passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on March 11, 2024. The youngest of three siblings, she was born on March 25, 1930, in Washington, D.C. to Florence Yarnell Boyer and Col. Clarence Leonard Boyer, US Army (Ret.). Her young childhood was spent on a farm in Ohio, where she developed a deep love and respect for animals as well as gardening. Her family moved to Tacoma Park, Maryland where she attended public school and was very active in the Girls Scouts (of which she was an active member throughout her life). At 16, Patricia met and befriended Bob Unger Sr, the lifeguard at the pool. She was not allowed to date at the time, but their friendship eventually became courtship after she graduated from high school.
Although her parents divorced during the difficult war years, they nurtured and loved her very much. During the spring semester of her junior year in high school, in 1946, young Patricia traveled to post World War 2 Germany to live with her father (an Army Civil Engineer in charge of keeping up the railroads in Berlin). It was a transformative experience.
She came back from Germany, graduated from High School, and began nursing school. By then, Bob was in Medical School. They got married after Bob, Sr. finished medical school at 24 and she graduated with her RN at 22. They were married for 59 wonderful years before Bob died in 2012. Together they raised 4 children: Lori, Bob Jr, Cindy and Kim.
She was a devout Christian and enjoyed attending church. She always loved to sew and cook and loved camping and hiking, including Volksmarching. Bob and Pat were very active at Windcrest United Methodist Church - the craft group, planning and finance committee and anything else that was needed.
Patricia was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She was always poised and a lady. Instrumental in furthering her husband's military and medical career, she was an exemplary officer's wife serving on many committees and hosting social events at their home. As a military spouse, she streamlined all the moves, making sure her children always felt at home wherever they went. She lived in Washington D.C, California, Maryland, Washington State, Ohio, Nebraska, Texas, Lakenheath England, Ramstein Germany, and in Illinois. They then retired to San Antonio. Pat and Bob both loved to travel, so after they retired, they got a chance to visit China, Russia, Alaska, England, and numerous locations in the U.S. Her children loved her very much and appreciated her patient and supportive manner.
All along the way, besides taking care of 4 kids, they always had animals in the household. Besides beloved pet dogs, horses, birds and cats, Pat would not turn her back on an animal in need. Not even skunks!
Her daughters Lori and Kim, passed in 2019. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Cindy Gable (Chalmers), and son, Bob Jr. (Beatriz). Her granddaughters are Sarah (Daniel), Roxanne (Owen), and Robyn. As Nana, Patricia is also survived by 2 great-grandsons (Ben and Sam) and two great-grand dogs (Gregory and Mister Michael).
She will be missed. We love you Mom and Nana.
