Pat was an inspiration to everyone who knew him and witnessed his determination as he beat back the odds again and again. Yet his was a gentle spirit. No one who knew him could recall him ever committing an unkind act.
He was born on July 19, 1954, in Mountain Home, Idaho, to Frank J. Tumulty Jr. and Vivian Ploch Tumulty - 10 months to the day after their wedding. His father was an Air Force officer, and Pat spent his childhood on the move, as military children do. He lived in California, Florida (twice), the Philippines and Maryland. But Texas was home, and it always drew the family back. As an adult, he settled in San Antonio, and loved being part of a large, boisterous extended family that included not only his parents and siblings but a host of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. He worked a number of jobs until health problems forced his retirement.
A person of deep curiosity, Pat showed an early talent and interest in numbers; when he was in elementary school, he would astound people by multiplying three-digit figures in his head. He also had an incredible memory. He figured out calendar patterns - if you named a date, he could tell you the day of the week on which it occurred. And he developed a passion for and sophisticated taste in rock music, which lasted throughout his life.
Pat, the eldest of four, was predeceased by his parents and his brother Frank J. Tumulty III. He is survived by his sister Karen Tumulty (Paul Richter) and his brother Michael Tumulty, as well as his nephews, Nick and Jack Richter.
A memorial service for Pat will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday March 5 in the chapel at Patriot Heights, 5000 Fawn Meadows, San Antonio, TX 78240. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Patriot Heights Associate Christmas Fund at the above address, in appreciation of the loving staff that helped provide support and a community to Pat in the final years of his life.
