

Patsy was born to James Lex Shinn and Arline Jones Shinn, both whom predeceased her. She is survived by four brothers and their spouses: Phil and Carmen, Eldon and Maxine, James and Sarah, Gene and Cathy Orcott. Her sister, Linda, predeceased Patsy.
Patsy is survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews. She kept up with all of them, encouraging in their endeavors and proudly watching as they achieved their goals. There are many extended family members, friends and neighbors who were also mutually loved by Patsy. Ruth Payton, whom she served with in the Air Force, had also been devotedly caring for many of her needs in the last several years. We hope all who can will attend one or both of the ceremonies to share in remembering Patsy and to help celebrate her life!
Patsy was a high achiever, graduating high school at age 16 and Lousiana College with a baccalaureate degree in nursing at age 20. She entered the USAF Nurse Corps in 1960, served in a variety of assignments in the US and overseas. During the Vietnam War, nurses in Southeast Asia could not meet the demand for aeromedical evacuation of the wounded. Patsy was among those assigned to a MAC hospital, tapped to participate in "Cold Dove". She provided care on C-141's carrying patients from Vietnam for treatment in the US.
The Air Force sent her to the University of Utah where she received a master's degree in science with a speciality in nurse midwifery. Assigned to the USAF Nurse Midwifery Program faculty at Andrews AFB, she helped prepare students in midwifery provide obstetrical care to patients throughout the AF. Patsy was loved by her patients, co-workers and students.
She attained the rank of colonel before retiring in 1983. During retirement, she traveled, volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and Cellular on Patrol.
A military ceremony will be at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery at 2:30 pm on Friday, Jan 21, 2022.
A celebration of life will be at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home at 3 pm on Saturday, Jan 22, 2022.
