Even though I am retired now, I wanted to catch a performance of your new book. I know that one is close to your heart. Did going back to the classroom slow you down? Were you really OK with doing that? I wanted to ask you that question before. You know -- before. I know how much you loved your wife, Allison, and your fur kids. Even if the humans in your family can come to an understanding of what has happened, the fur kids won't. They only know you are not there to hug them and talk with them. 'As one of Mr. Epner's 6th grade students, I was shocked at the news of his passing. Some of my friends called and told me, but I thought I was dealing with a rumor. I thought that when I got to school, he would be there and some kid would say "I thought you were dead!" And he would reply "Well, does it look like I'm dead? Who told you that?" I soon realized the nightmare was true. I'm very sad because when I first got to middle school and met him, he seemed like the best teacher a kid could ever want. He always wrote the funniest word problems for math and was very unique. Mr. Epner always made me excited to come to school so as to see what he would do next to get a laugh. On the first few Mondays, he sang a song about our lesson concept. I will forever miss his everlasting humor. ='

'mr epner was a great teacher that we all cared and loved for. i was not a student of him though for i was on another team. i had always wished that he had been one of my teachers. he was funny, nice, caring, and in all just a really good guy. it breaks all of our hearts here at rawlinson to see such a loved one go. but we know that deep down in our hearts that he will always be with us no matter what. the last time i saw him was when he had performed a great presentaion at our school on write night. it was fantastic and kept the crowd laughing histarically! at least some of us got to enjoy his humor and love befor he past. mr. epner, we love you with all our hearts, you will stay in our school spirits forever. thank you for being a great romodel for our students here at rawlinson...

'Paul did his Magical Lunchbox presentation for the children of both ele. schools where I have worked: Morningside Ele. in The Colony and Valley Ridge Ele. in Lewisville. I met him at a Librarian's convention and decided to book him. I was glad I did! I was able to enthusiastically recommend him to my colleagues. He was so much fun. The students were captivated and everyone had a blast. I will always remember him for his high energy level, sense of humor, dedication to becoming an author, and for the fond way he spoke of his wife and later on, his daughter. I didn't get to see him after he moved to San Antonio. His autographed books are on our "Autographed by the Author" shelf. 
We are sorry to lose this talented, vibrant man. May God bless his family.'

Paul has visited Ward Elementary here in Houston several times over the past few years, and is a favorite with the students here. They loved his presentations and his books. They still talk about his Magical Lunchbox and his books are never on the shelf as they are always permanently checked out. His vibrant personality will be sadly missed around the schools in Texas and beyond.

'I am so sorry to hear about Paul! My parents emailed the notice to me. My dad, Joe Harber and Mrs. Epner both taught at SAC. I graduated with Paul from Lee in 1981 and he got in touch with me via email before our 20th reunion. We actually spent some time together at the reunion and met each other's spouses. He sent some Herbert Hilligan books to my kids and my husband has been reading them at the elementary school lately where my son goes to school. I lost my brother, also named Paul, in 2003 at age 37 from an unexpected heart condition, so I really hate to hear about this.... my family's prayers are with you.

'I would like to send my sympathy to Paul's family. I am a librarian in Victoria and had his Herbert Hilligan series in my elementary library to share and enjoy with the students. I was fortunate enough to meet Paul at one of the TLA conventions. I was able to get books signed, as well as getting photos with him. My students loved the signed books and were always interested in seeing the author's picture. He will be missed.'

Making young people feel special was clearly one of Paul's many gifts. I know he will be sorely missed at Rawlinson MS, as well as by friends and family.'
