"Mickey" was born in Ashtabula, Ohio to Paul and Marie Kaihlanen. He attended Harbor High School and graduated with honors from Adelbert College of Case Western Reserve University and the Case Western Reserve School of Medicine.
While in college, he received the outstanding freshman and sophomore awards, was elected President of ODK (the men's leadership honorary) his Junior year, and was class President his Senior year. That is where he met and married his wife of 68 years, Alys Lewis Kaihlanen.
After a medical internship at Brooke Army Hospital in San Antonio, Texas, he had residencies in Internal Medicine at University Hospital of Cleveland and University of Texas Health Science Center in Dallas, Texas. A US Army Captain in Special Forces (Green Berets), he had almost 30 years in private practice in Internal Medicine. He served as team physician to the San Antonio Spurs and as an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Texas School of Medicine. He was also the Chief of the Department of Medicine at Baptist and Methodist Hospitals, all in San Antonio. A medical consultant to USAA and three other insurance companies, he was the founder and President of South Texas Clinical Trials, where he conducted hundreds of clinical trials and was the author or co-author of 18 articles in major medical journals on new hypertension drugs. He retired in 1993.
A diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine, he had the honor and privilege of serving and caring for thousands of patients over 30 years of medical practice in San Antonio, Texas. In spite of his very successful career, he always felt that his greatest accomplishment (along with his wife Alys) was raising 2 wonderful children, 4 polite, intelligent and loving grandchildren, and 4 beautiful great grandchildren.
In his spare time, "Dr. K" enjoyed raising llamas and goats on his 4K Ranch in Comfort, Texas. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and flyfishing all over the world, from South Texas to Montana, and Alaska to Mozambique. He enjoyed golf and traveled extensively, always accompanied by Alys.
