Pilar Rubio passed peacefully in her sleep Friday, July 5, 2024, at the age of 103. She is preceded in death by her husband, Ernesto Rubio, Sr., and eldest daughter, Maria de los Angeles Rubio Soto, as well as five siblings: Herminia, Didio, Bernarda, Elba, and Guadalupe.
She is survived by her children Ernesto Rubio, Jr. (Carmen), and Alma Rosa Rubio, who took over her care after the passing of Pilar's husband. In her last days, Pilar was lovingly cared for by her three grandchildren Laura, Leti, and Gabriel. Pilar is also survived by ten great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Pilar was born in Candela, Coahuila, Mexico to Bernardo Lara and Pilar Daniel. She worked as a maid and nanny for 14 years in Nuevo Laredo, until she met and married her husband, with whom she was a loving wife for almost 70 years. Once they were married, Pilar and Ernesto, Sr. moved to Laredo, TX to start their family. After their youngest was born the family moved to San Antonio, Texas, and lived in the same house for the rest of her life. Both Pilar and Ernesto proudly saw all three of their children earn their college degree at Our Lady of the Lake University.
Since 1955, Pilar and her family were parishioners at Our Lady of Good Council Catholic Church. She also enjoyed volunteering in the kitchen during the annual Church Fall Festival. It was during this time that she became close friends with Father Fidele Dikete and remained so for the rest of her life. She took great pride in earning her citizenship and the right to vote. And aside from raising her children, Pilar was exceptionally talented at gardening, sewing, knitting, and crocheting. Some of her other hobbies were attending activities at Madonna Center, raising lovebirds, cooking, and grilling. She was a truly loving grandmother for all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Pilar Rubio was a faithful and loving Catholic who loved her family, her church, and her community. Please maintain her in your prayers and may we all honor her memory by continuing her good works. May she rest in peace.
