

Rafael Gutierrez, age 95, passed away on Thursday, November 27, 2014 in San Antonio. He was born in Uvalde, Texas to Florencio Gutierrez and Maria Espada Gutierrez on October 10, 1919. He served his country in the US Army in World War II and was the recipient of the Purple Heart with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster and a Bronze Star. He served as a Technical Sargent in Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Southern France, Rhineland, including the invasion of North Africa, Solerno, Italy, and Germany with Company D, 1st Battalion, 141st Infantry, 36th Division as a heavy machine gunner.
Rafael retired from Kelly AFB as a GS-9 working as an Aircraft Maintenance Scheduler. He was an avid reader and preferred working outdoors, he was a Cowboys fan and the Yankees were his favorite baseball team.
Rafael was preceded in death by his loving, wife Mamie Canales Gutierrez. He is survived by son, Rodolfo "Rod" Gutierrez and wife, Sandra M.; daughter, Ada Martinez and husband, David; son, Daniel Gutierrez; grandchildren, Rebecca Verdi and husband Michael, Mari Corales, Julian Rodriguez and wife Vanessa, Andrea Gutierrez, Matthew Gutierrez, and wife, Ursula; Grand Children, Bryan Martinez, Amanda Martinez, Theresa Martinez; great-grandchildren, Dylan Verdi, Lauren Verdi, Joseph Rodriguez, Matthew Rodriguez, Gabriela Rodriguez, Christi Rodriguez, Miriam Gutierrez and numerous other relatives and friends. Visitation will begin at 4:00 p.m. Monday, December 8, 2014 at Porter Loring McCullough.
