Aunt Ray,

You will be missed but not forgotten.  I have many fond memories of spending time with you crotcheting and visiting with you in your back room.  Our family was blessed with your generous heart.  Thank you for taking in my dad as your roommate and for always receiving us into your home as if it were our own.  You showered me with many gifts as I was growing up and I still have and cherish the poncho you made for me as a Christmas gift when I was 4 years old and the little outfits you crotcheted for my babies  My love for you runs deep and I will always carry you in my heart with much love.

We missed out on a lot growing up in the military life.  One thing that never changed is when we came to San Antonio before our next tour.

I remember Grandma Ray coming around the corner from the bus stop on Zazamora.  She was always well dressed, in high heeled shoes and holding an umbrella to shield from the hot summer sun.  Sometimes she would bring treats from the HEB where she caught the bus home every day.  I never asked her if she didn't like having to take the bus every day… the truth is because I never once heard her complain about her walk to and from the bus stops.  She was a very strong and independent woman and I admired her for being that way.

I miss the little casa en la calle Ross. Even though I complained most of the time about being there with nothing to do or that it was way too hot inside.  The kitchen was closed at night along with anything that put out electricity. No lights, No T.V., No fan… just us on the floor on top of layers and layers of quilted blankets, a savana to cover up,  the noise of the night outside and if we were lucky the breeze from the burglar bar screen door.  If you were brave and wanted a snack in the middle of the night you would be welcomed with a call from grandma's back room, “Las ormigas night eaters!”  We would just chuckle because grandma was not use to having guests in her house.  In the morning when you were in the shower too long grandma would knock on the bathroom door, “Destroyers, Destroyers”, as her water pipes howled and moaned. Even the water pipes were snitches working for grandma when the destroyers were taking a bath.  That is when we knew we were back home in San Antonio. The little casa was home to me.


I will miss her very much.  I am proud to come from such a strong, independent, funny, and loving woman.  I know when God welcomed Grandma Ray into Heaven she danced the Charranga in a parade fit for a Fiesta Queen.

My Grandmother used to pray this passage to me every morning while I was in the hospital some 30 year's ago. TheLORD is my sheppard; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy stafff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.  Surely goodness an mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. May you rest in peace my Angel. Until we meet again.
