Randal L. Gibson passed peacefully on November 25th, 2014, at his home in San Antonio. Born February 10th, 1950, in Aspermont, Texas, he spent his early years on cotton farms and in a handful of small Texas towns. There he learned to be resourceful, respectful and dependable and developed a work ethic that served him well --- he never changed. Family gatherings and reunions were a constant and positive experience, as were his many friends.
He graduated from high school in Toyah, Texas, at the top of his class, was a state champion in UIL prose reading and scored over 1,000 points in his high school basketball career. Randy was a 1974 graduate of UT Austin and started his career in Civil Service in St. Louis in 1975, where he quickly learned that not everyone was a Dallas Cowboy or Texas Longhorn fan. He retired in 2006 as Director of the Civilian Personnel Advisory Center at Fort Sam Houston. Randy was the master of often obscure, but sometimes useful facts about vocabulary, math and blackjack. He was an avid golfer and sports fan, but he was happiest spending time as 'Grandy' with his pride and joy granddaughters, Madeline and Mallory.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughter, Monday, and husband, Stephen Pundt; granddaughters, Madeline and Mallory; mother, Virginia; brothers, Lynn, and wife, Sandra, and Richard, and wife, Bernie; sister, Susan Renz; and numerous family members and cherished friends. He was preceded in death by his father, A.L. Gibson, son, Matthew, and brother-in-law, Otto Renz.
A memorial in his honor will be held on Tuesday, December 2nd at the Main Chapel of Fort Sam Houston at 2:00 pm. Access to Fort Sam Houston must be made through the Walters Street Gate.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warriors Fund or the charity of your choice in his name. Randy was a proud Texan and American. May he rest in peace. He will be sorely missed. His ashes will be interred in the family plot in Toyah.
