A native San Antonian, his family lived in Brownsville, TX before relocating to El Paso in 1963. Ray was the owner of Footfit Orthopedic Shoe Store until his retirement in 1998.
One of Raymond's greatest pleasures was the Christmas Shoe Giveaway held each year for under privileged children with the sponsorship and generosity of the El Paso Police Department. As a Certified Pedorthist, at one time, he was established as one of only thirteen to practice in the State of Texas.
Raymond had a giving heart ~ he established an "open clinic" in Juarez, Mexico, held every Sunday morning to all handicapped children, whether they were U.S. or Mexican citizens, catering to the poor or destitute.
Two of his favorite expressions were, "If you know of a crippled child, send him to me" and "Dee, line 1".
After his retirement, Ray and Dolores returned to San Antonio. He was a proud veteran of World War II, enlisting in the Merchant Marines followed by active service in the U.S. Marine Corps.
He was presented with many awards including the Italian American National Hall of Fame Humanitarian Award; Presidents Volunteer Action Award presented by President Ronald Reagan; the Mankind Award El Paso Sertoma Club; member of the El Maida Shrine Temple El Paso, TX, member of the Anezah Shrine Temple Mexico City, Honorary member of the Mexico City Shrine Hospital for Crippled Children; City of El Paso Conquistador Award; George Washington Freedom Foundation Award; Kiwanis Family of the Year Award; El Paso Sheriff's Office Humanitarian Award; El Paso Police Humanitarian Award; LULAC Humanitarian Award Council #132; Bowie Ex's Humanitarian Award and Military Order of the World Wars-Citizen of the Year Award.
Raymond is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Dolores Villarreal. They have three children: Gus Villarreal and wife, Trish; Dr. Cynthia Rivera and husband, James; Leticia Hicks and husband, Ron; grandchildren: Michael and wife, Krista; Lee, Jessica and April Rivera, Justin and wife, Tara; Brian Villarreal and Christian Hicks; great-grandchildren: Graci and Jordan Villarreal and Lorelei Lemieux; and his brother, Gil Villarreal.
Raymond shared his kindness and generosity to those in need; he was deeply loved and will be missed by all those he touched.
