Rene Martinez, age 61, passed away on Thursday, February 11, 2021 at his home in Selma, Texas. He was born on August 6, 1959 in El Paso, Texas, to parents, Pedro and Maria Gomez Martinez. In 1977, Rene joined USAF and served his first assignment at Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi. During his years of military service, he earned an AAS as Instructor of Technology and Military Science, an AAS in Social Services, and a BA in Business Administration from Wayland Baptist University. In 1998, he retired as USAF Senior Master Sergeant out of Howard Air Force Base, Panama, completing 22 years in the aircraft maintenance and personnel fields. In 2001, Rene earned a MEd in Educational Psychology from the University of Oklahoma and entered federal service as an English as a Second Language Instructor for DLIELC at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, from which he retired early as Curriculum Flight Chief in 2016 due to a terminal medical diagnosis.
In 1999, Rene placed all his faith in Jesus Christ while attending Iglesia Bautista El Dorado in Panama City, Panama. From this faith stemmed good works as he began his discipleship under Pastor Ricardo Fernandez. In 2001, he became a member of Converse Hispanic Baptist Church in Converse, Texas, where he served diligently as a worship director, teacher, deacon, and elder under Pastor Jess Aguilar. In 2010, he joined Community Bible Church in San Antonio, Texas, serving as a volunteer and leading various bible studies. After his diagnosis in 2016, God, by His Holy Spirit, led Rene to many opportunities including preaching the gospel in Spanish on AM Radio for 6 months and co-hosting a bible study for Spanish-speaking military members through Military Cru until shortly before his death. Rene’s greatest desire, despite his achievements, many and admirable as they may be, was that everyone he knew would one day, in a true act of faith, know the God who made him, predestined him, called him, justified him, and has now glorified him. May all, who read or hear these words, know the one true God, Father of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
He was preceded in death by his father Pedro and mother Maria. Rene is survived by his wife of more than 35 years, Ines Martino de Martinez; his son Rene Alejandro Martinez; his daughter Karoline Veronica Puente; his son Josue Ismael Martinez; and his grandchildren Michael Allen Puente, Isabella Rose Puente, and Marco Alejandro Martinez.
The family will receive relatives and friends beginning at 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 19, 2021, at Porter Loring Mortuary North, for an open casket visitation until 12:00 p.m.. Shortly thereafter, a memorial service will be held and the family requests that only relatives and invited guests attend.
