Richard William Cox

Richard William Cox, usually known as Rick or Pawpaw was born 27 Nov 1940 in Walled Lake, Michigan to parents, Charles Richard Cox and Doris Viora Peterson Cox. He was the fourth of six children, his siblings – Jan Richard, Karen, Ian, Kurt and Kathleen. His parents moved to San Antonio during the early 1940’s where his father was involved in top-secret Military operations. This top-secret military information has only recently come to light and Rick was very proud of the service his father provided our country.

Rick graduated from Thomas Edison High School in San Antonio in 1959. On 11 May 1963, he married the love of his life, Betty Jo Fore and welcomed Betty Jo’s children, Mark and Tammy as his own. Soon another son, Jeffrey Richard Cox joined the family.

Rick owned three Full-Service Gas Stations in San Antonio and later worked at several Chevy dealerships. He retired after working for his son Jeff’s construction company. Rick was very active in his children’s lives. He coached the boys in baseball for many years. The family were avid campers and Rick spent many winters deer-hunting with his sons. During his years at the service stations, he started to collect old coins. He was most excited when he found Indian nickels and Mercury Dimes.

As their children got married, Betty and Rick had many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. He faithfully attended his High School Reunions for both his and his beloved wife, Betty Jo’s alma mater of Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio. Rick and Betty Jo loved to travel. Rick’s favorite travel memories included winning enough money on a craps game in the Bahamas to put down a cement drive-way on the home his son Jeff built for them in Bulverde and waking up to see an elk outside their cabin in Yellowstone National Park.

In their retirement years, he and Betty Jo loved to go to antiques shows, garage sales and flea markets in search of treasure.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the American Cancer Association in honor of Rick.
