Richard Vernon Doty

Richard "Dick" Vernon Doty, age 83, of San Antonio, TX passed away peacefully on Saturday October 14, 2017. He was born in Goodhue, Minnesota on November 21, 1933. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis, MN in 1952 and soon after joined the US Navy.

While stationed in South Texas, he met his future wife, Dodie Vickers. They wed June 3, 1954 in Sinton, Texas. They resided in Evanston, Illinois until he finished his naval commitment. Dick and Dodie returned to Sinton where he joined his father-in-law in farming. After a few years, he left farming to begin a lengthy career in the grocery business. He retired from HEB in 1985 after 27 years of service. Dick stayed active with HEB after his retirement, serving as president of the HEB Senior Partners for several years.

Throughout his retirement, he and his wife enjoyed traveling. They visited Australia, New Zealand, Canada and many spots in the United States. They often spent summers in Cloudcroft NM with a large group of friends. Dick was an outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, snow skiing, golfing and white water rafting.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Beatrice Freisheim of Minneapolis, MN; his father, Vernon Thumann of Redwing MN; and his wife Wanda Jo "Dodie" Doty of Sinton, TX. He is survived by his daughter, Pam Doty of San Antonio, TX; his son Gary (Karen) Doty of Portland, TX and granddaughter Sarah Doty of Austin, TX. Also surviving are his two sisters, Nancy Thumann Mayer of Scottsdale, AZ and Bonnie Thumann Dorsten of Winter Garden, FL, along with numerous nieces, nephews and many wonderful friends.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2017 at 2:00pm at Porter Loring Mortuary North, 2102 North Loop 1604 East, San Antonio, Texas 78232,(210) 495-8221.
