Richard "Papa" Thompson

Richard “Papa” Thompson, of Jefferson, Iowa, formerly of Leakey, Texas, passed away tragically on Friday, June 27, 2025. A proud long-haul truck driver by trade and a devoted grandfather by heart, Richard lived a life marked by grit, laughter, music, and unconditional love.

Born in Aransas Pass, Texas and raised in the quiet hill country of Leakey, Texas, Richard developed an early love for the open road and classic rock music. He spent much of his life crisscrossing the country behind the wheel of a big rig, but his heart was always with his family, especially his grandchildren, who knew him simply and affectionately as "Papa."

Before a shoulder injury slowed him down, Richard could often be found dancing to live music, taking in the joy of a summer festival, or riding his motorcycle down scenic backroads - always with a sense of freedom and adventure. Music, especially the rhythms of classic rock, was a constant companion on his many journeys.

In recent years, Richard made his home in Jefferson, Iowa, where he built strong connections and continued the role he cherished most: being Papa. He took his grandchildren fishing, taught them life lessons through quiet wisdom and patience, and was a steady, loving presence in their lives. His impact on them will echo for generations.

Richard’s storytelling, easy smile, and generous heart touched everyone who knew him. He lived simply but gave richly - in time, in love, and in loyalty.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Joseph Anthony and David Wayne Thompson. He is deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his daughters, Amber Thompson and husband Jason Smith and Katherine Grunden; stepdaughter, Tiffany Ashby; siblings, Melisa Lange and husband Pat, Shawn Thompson, Jason Thompson, and Sandra Duke; grandchildren, Addison, Christian, Neva, Sophie, Amelia, Stephen, and Adrian; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and a lifetime of friends.
