Richard Wayne Thomson, age 76, passed away peacefully in his home in San Antonio, Texas on March 4th, 2020. Richard was born in Fort Worth, Texas on November 21st, 1943 to Puryear and Guyneth Thomson. Richard graduated from Monterrey High School in Lubbock, Texas in 1962. Richard had a myriad of hobbies, and a love for the outdoors. Among these were a passion for golf, tennis, water sports, snow skiing, and hunting. He also had a love for vintage automobiles, collecting a series of red corvettes over the years. In addition to this, he was a licensed pilot and flight instructor. Richard was a gregarious personality who never met a stranger. He was deeply involved with his church, Community Bible Church. Richard assisted with a plethora of church events, including hosting an adult life group and attending a men’s bible study. Richard had a servant’s heart and devoted his life to God. He never missed an opportunity to tell others about Jesus and share his faith.
In October of 1964, Richard met the love of his life, Brenda Carol Teague, while attending Southwestern University. Richard always said he knew from the first night he met her, she would be his wife. Sure enough, the couple was married in April, 1965 in Dallas, Texas. Soon after, Richard and Brenda moved to Lubbock, Texas where he graduated from Texas Tech University in 1967. Richard and Brenda have been happily married for 54 years, and their infallible relationship rooted in Christ has been an inspiration to family and friends. They began their family in 1967 with the birth of their first daughter, Debbi. Not long after, their second daughter, Kim, was born in 1971. Their family moved to San Antonio, Texas, in 1974 where Richard, along with a few partners, started an insurance company, Insurance One. Insurance One is a successful company that is still operating today in San Antonio and Dallas. Richard later retired from the company due to health issues.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Puryear and Guyneth Thomson. He is survived by his loving wife, Brenda Thomson; his two daughters, Debbi Robertson (Chris) and Kim Cook (Jeff); his sister, Mary Ann Teeter (Carl); his niece, Lisa Chandler, and his nephew, Greg Teeter; his five grandchildren, Emily Robertson, Ty Robertson, Lexi Cook, Kylie Cook, and Colton Cook; in addition to numerous close friends and extended family.
Richard tenaciously battled Parkinson’s disease for the last 20 years. We would like to recognize Brenda, his wife, for selflessly caring for Richard and supporting him throughout his struggle with Parkinson’s. Brenda has remained by his side, never wavering in her patience or trust in God despite their circumstances. Because of her, Richard was deeply loved and cared for until his final moments on earth. Richard was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was a light to many, and will be greatly missed. Visitation will be held Monday, March 9th, 2020 from 4-6 p.m. at Sunset Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 10th, 2020 at 2 p.m. at Sunset Funeral Home, with interment to follow.
