Rita Marie Mecke

Beloved Wife, Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother, Rita Marie Mecke, went to our Lord in Heaven at the age of 94. Rita was the second of 9 children born to Milton and Josephine Lutz in San Antonio, Texas. She attended St. Ann’s Catholic School, graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic High School, and attended night classes at St. Mary’s University while working full-time for the City Water Board.

Rita met the love of her life, Bob Mecke, at a New Year’s Eve dance. They were married later that year on October 22, 1949. Rita and Bob enjoyed over 70 years of marriage together and lovingly raised their family of 7 children. Rita never missed celebrating birthdays and special events for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, making sure that everyone always received a gift and a card. She had a very giving heart and never hesitated to help anyone who needed help. Rita and Bob spent over 50 years of their lives caring for their son, Tommy, who was born with Muscular Dystrophy. They found great joy in sharing their experiences and supporting many young families who had children with M.D.

Rita mastered one of the most difficult jobs imaginable – raising a family of 7 children! She taught all of them to put faith in God first and made sure that all the children received a quality Catholic education. The Mecke family worshipped for over 60 years at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, where Rita served as a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader for many years. She positively influenced the lives of many young scouts as well as other leaders. Rita was an active member of the Sultanas, a women’s fraternal service association attached to the Order of the Alhambra. Dancing was a favorite pastime of Bob and Rita. Together they seemed to dance through any difficulty life presented.

Rita was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Bob; sister, Marjorie; brothers, Clayton and Milton; daughter, Emily; son, Tommy; and grandson, Michael. Rita is survived by daughter, Linda Mecke LaGrone (Jim); son, Richard C. Mecke (Sharon); son Mark E. Mecke (Cindy); daughter, June Mecke; son, William C. “Bill” Mecke (Sherri); 17 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren; and a multitude of close relatives and friends.

The Mecke family expresses their sincere gratitude to Ricky Rudolph for the many years he devoted to caring for Bob and “Ms. Rita” and to Diana Arriola for the loving care that she gave to both during the last months of their lives.
