Robert M. Cortez, a cherished son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, left this world on December 31, 2024, after a valiant battle with cancer. Born on July 10, 1943, in Anahuac, Nuevo León, Mexico.
Robert's early life began with humble roots as his family were migrant farmers, which led them to Gary, Indiana, where he grew up, attended school, and met the love of his life, Gloria. Their enduring romance blossomed into a marriage that lasted 58 beautiful years. Together, they raised a family that included their loving children Cindy G. (Michael), Robert Chris Cortez, Daniel Cortez (Lina), and Melinda Merrill (John), who gave them the joy of 11 grandchildren: Mikayla (Nicolas), Cassandra, Marina, Daniel, Jase, Liliana, Jaxon, Jameson, Jaeden, Ruby, and Ariana.
Robert's life was marked by a commitment to service and excellence. After graduating from East Chicago Washington High School in 1963, he answered the call of duty by serving in the United States Marine Corp Reserves from 1964 to 1970. His work ethic and dedication to craftsmanship led him to a distinguished career that spanned the globe, working in 23 countries as a welder, pipefitter, project foreman, inspector, and ultimately spending the last 23 years skillfully operating tower cranes. Robert's commitment to his community began with the tradition of volunteering with his family at the Raul Jimenez Thanksgiving event and his many years of involvement in the Knights of Columbus Council.
Robert's zest for life was matched by his diverse interests. In his earlier days, he enjoyed playing baseball, cycling, volleyball, and running. His passion for sports was shared with his family, as he coached softball for his daughters, watched numerous soccer matches or ran through the course for his kids’ cross country meets. Robert's life was a testament to the values he held dear: the joy of a well-lived adventure. His pride in his family was evident, as he would often speak of their accomplishments, whether it was watching dance performances, baseball games, or simply pushing his grandchildren on the tire swing in his backyard. His many stories, filled with humor and wisdom, are treasures that will continue to inspire and guide his family.
A man of many talents, Robert could often be found fixing things, sometimes resorting to his trusty electrical or duct tape to get the job done. But it was his role as a family man that Robert cherished most. He was a devoted husband to his wife Gloria, affectionately known as "Glorita." Their last dance, at her 80th birthday party, was a testament to their enduring love and the life they shared surrounded by family and friends. His love for her was unwavering, and his final wish was to ensure that she would always be taken care of.
Robert's legacy is carried on by his beloved wife, Gloria Cortez; his children, treasured grandchildren and his siblings, Mike Cortez (Gina), Omero Cortez (Cynthia), and Esther Whitaker (Andrew). He was preceded in death by his parents, Miguel and Consuelo Cortez, and siblings Cheli Cortez and Reynaldo Cortez.
As we say goodbye to Robert, we celebrate a life lived with purpose, love, and a spirit that will forever remain in the hearts of those he touched. His wish was not to be forgotten, and indeed, his memory will live on, and his stories retold for generations to come. Robert's journey through life was one of joy, challenges, and triumphs, and he faced each with the same courage and grace that defined him.
We honor the memory of Robert M. Cortez, a man whose handy nature, selfless heart, a life well-lived and a legacy of love, family, and adventure. His spirit will continue to inspire and guide us, and his memory will be cherished forever in our hearts. His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy will continue to live on.
