He was born to Mary Ellen and E.D. McDonald on December 27, 1942 in McAllen, Texas. After graduating from San Benito High School, Jim attended Texas A&M University for a short time before joining the Army National Guard. He married the love of his life, Lois Jean (Moon) McDonald in 1965. Together, they had three beloved sons: Davey, Danny, and Stevie.
Jim was an active and passionate member of Baptist Temple in San Benito, Texas and then Eisenhauer Road Baptist Church in San Antonio. Countless people benefited from his tireless efforts and many roles: Deacon, RA leader, bus driver, music technician and much more. Until the very end, Jim enjoyed the joyous music of the church–traditional hymns, tunes from the Gaithers, and especially, the singing of son, Dan and piano playing of wife, Lois.
Having spent his working years as a lineman with Southwestern Bell and later in Special Services for AT&T, Jim retired in 2002 with 38 years of service. When not working, Jim enjoyed bass fishing, woodworking projects, occasionally traveling with good friends, attending his six grandchildren’s events and activities, and 33 years of playing a bi-monthly domino game with life-long friends. Jim may be most remembered for the countless hours he spent watering and maintaining his beautiful lawn and tomato gardens.
Jim is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lois; sons Dave (Ronessa), Dan (Dolsie), and Steve (Sally); grandchildren, Lacie Miller (Ryan), Jake (Jasmine), Ashley, Nick, Jenna, and Zack; great-grandsons, Maverick and Maxson Miller; sisters, Phyllis Hall and Sharon (Oma) Coker, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
A celebration of life will be held Thursday, March 16, at Freedom Hill Church (formerly Eisenhauer Road Baptist Church) at 3950 Eisenhauer Road, San Antonio. Visitation will be from 9:00-10:00 with services to begin at 10:00 am. Graveside services to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, 17501 Nacogdoches, San Antonio.
