Robert H. Katz was born March 3, 1936, in North Wildwood, NJ to Mary Katz and Abraham Katz. He lived in Southern New Jersey and attended Bridgeton High School where he was a member of the football team, basketball team and baseball team. He was a boy scout, and a member of the Civil Air Patrol where he became a pilot.
Upon graduating, Bob joined the United States Army as a Military Police Officer. He was first assigned to Fort Sill, OK, but was soon transferred to Fort Sam Houston, TX where he would meet his wife, Marilyn Marie Schulz who also worked at Ft. Sam. They married in 1957 in Karnes City, Texas and began their life together in San Antonio.
Shortly after marrying Marilyn, Bob left the Army and joined the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) where he would work for the next 23 years and eventually retire as a Lieutenant. During this time Bob and Marilyn welcomed their only child, Melody Lynn, into the family. After Bob retired from the SAPD the family moved to Millville, New Jersey and Bob became one of the heads of security for both the Playboy Hotel & Casino and The Showboat Casino. Thirteen years later the family returned to San Antonio and Bob returned to the SAPD as a Latent Fingerprint Expert. Always a police officer at heart, Bob helped found San Antonios first Cold Case team and solved cases before finally retiring to enjoy life as a grandfather to his three grandchildren.
Bob was a source of endless stories, met five US Presidents, was a Freemason, cheered for the Dallas Cowboys, and San Antonio Spurs. He was the life of any party, always had a fun sense of humor with his signature funny smile, always gave his three short kisses and was loved by all. He made the best Pina Coladas and enjoyed grilling his famous briskets at his many backyard cookouts. Eating spaghetti and meatballs was always his favorite meal with a good slice of apple pie or cheesecake on the side. He loved going to the ranch down in Goliad to shoot clay pigeons and hunt doves. His favorite saying was "and what have you." Opera and Broadway were his music genres of choice, "Some Enchanted Evening" was his favorite song, and he was actually a pretty good singer. Custom suites and shirts with his initials on the cuffs with the perfect matching tie and pocket square were his look of choice. He loved to garden and water his yard and always had spotless windows and floors that shined.
He is survived by his wife Marilyn M. Katz, daughter Melody L. Gillinger, son-in-law Gregory M. Gillinger, brother Clark A. Katz and three grandchildren Grant, Morgan and Madison.
