

After graduating from St Peter’s High School, Bob enlisted in the US Marines in 1946 and after serving he returned to Worcester where he worked and ultimately married his sweetheart Ruth on November 17,1951. His Catholic faith was important to him, and he was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He joined the US Air Force in 1951 and over the course of his career he was promoted to an officer after completing Officers Candidate School and receiving his bachelor degree at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He had many assignments in the Air Force that took him to Saglek Bay, Labrador; Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Lima, Peru. After Lima, he was promoted to Major and took an assignment in Utapao, Thailand. His final assignment was at Andrew’s AFB in Maryland where he retired in 1970. After retirement, he moved his family to San Antonio and began the second half of his career working as Vice President of Finance and Facilities at Our Lady of the Lake University. While there he completed his MBA. He was a member of the San Antonio Rotary Club. He also enjoyed his Irish heritage and was a member of the Harp and Shamrock Society and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. One of Bob’s passions was playing golf. He loved to travel and took many cruises with his love, Ruth. He was a great husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, and uncle and loved by all.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Ruth M. Smith; his mother, Margaret; his son Mark G. Smith; and his daughter Mary P. Smith.
Robert is survived by his daughter Kathleen M. Smith; his son, Michael C. Smith (Myra); and his daughter Patricia J. Martin (Al); his grandchildren, Connor and Cody Smith, Alec Gebhart, Ryan, Sean, and Dillon Martin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm, on Monday, November 28, 2022, at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
