Robert (aka, Bobby, Bob, Walt and Popo) was born in 1941 to Edmund and Hattie Mae Walton. He was the son and grandson of the founders of St. Marks Missionary Baptist church where he was a junior deacon and a baritone in the church choir. He also was an avid swimmer and athlete. In 7th grade, he started going together with his eventual wife of 62 years, Eula Williams Walton. After attending Clark University where he was pre-med, he joined the United States Air Force. Although he trained and was stationed at multiple locations, most notably was Clark AFB and Lackland AFB (Wilford Hall Hospital) where he received multiple commendations for his clinical medicine work in pathology, serology and chemistry. While serving his Air Force time, he also worked at Santa Rosa and Methodist Hospitals. After 20 years in the Air Force that lead to retirement, Robert worked for a short period at Southwest Research (bench science) in Chemistry, while continuing to work at Methodist where he finished up after 20+ years (with a heck of a retirement party).
Robert absolutely loved sports including football (Baltimore Colts (the real Colts), Washington Redskins (and anyone but the Cowboys), Florida, and 'Bama), the San Antonio Spurs and the San Antonio Stars (really any good players of any team and games), boxing, NASCAR (which he watched for the crashes) and track and field, including college and the Olympics. His memory of sports was imperial, especially when reliving the Colts, the old ABA, Ali & Frazier, ‘the shot heard round the world’ [1976], and the Memorial Day Miracle [1999]. He was also a huge fan of soul and R&B with a significant collection of vinyl from the 50’s-90's (not to mention he still had his reel-to-reel and 8-tracks of EWF). And, the man could still sing, even as late as weeks before his death. Popo valued justice, democracy, public service, education, science, and family values.
While going through his last trials and tribulations, in the last month he confirmed that the most important thing to him was his family. Our quite gentle giant was proud of his family and was overjoyed by the accomplishments of his kids and grands. Robert leaves behind his wife, Eula; children, Taryn ‘Teri’, Raoul Erik and Julie, and Tamara 'Tam' Walton. Also, his brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Shirley, sisters-in-law, Betty Ann Singleton, and Shirley and Arthur (deceased) Manigault. He is preceded by his, brother and sister-in law, Marvin and Maggie Lee Jenkins, sister and brother-in-law, Rose Evelyn and Freddie White, brother-in-laws, Harry Williams (New York) and Harry Williams (Philippines), brother and sister-in-law, Roger and Remedios Walton, and brother, Willie 'Bill' Walton.
He was blessed with grandchildren, RiShard, Robin Bruce, Ryan, Elexandria, Travis, Isaac Saenz, Reece, Avery, Robert (deceased), Karmen Saenz, Raveen and great-grandson Andrei Saenz, Kaetlyn, and Reilee Elijah Walton. And leaves behind nieces and nephews, Marvin C. and Wynell Jenkins, Tracy Jenkins Parker and Arthur Parker, Wanda and Sandy Gathers, Sandra and Harvey Middleton, Pamela and Darryl Smith, Chris and Marlena Singleton, Calvin and Jean (deceased) Singleton, Michelle Walton, Rausaline and Troy Grisby, Ronald (deceased) Walton, Dennis Walton, Wendell and Pam Singleton, Rashael, Rashaad and Mika Walton, Devin and Stephanie Adams, Raven Walton and Crystal Dunsford.
