

Lt. Col. Robert A. "Bob" Wheeless, U.S. Air Force, (Ret.) was born in Portland, Oregon, March 12, 1932 and passed away on January 20, 2016 in San Antonio, Texas. He graduated from the University of Oregon. Bob participated in varsity track and played baseball at Oregon. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI). Bob played in the marching and concert bands and orchestra. Upon graduation, he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant and served for over 20 years. Among his many assignments were tours in Alaska, California, Nevada, Alabama, where he attended Air Command and Staff College, and Texas. Bob retired as Chief Systems Design and Maintenance from technical training at Air Training Command as well as Project Manager in Systems Development at the Military Personnel Center. Upon retirement, he joined USAA and retired as Vice-President of Systems Design and Maintenance for the Property and Casualty Division. Bob spent many years as Choir Director at MacArthur Park Lutheran Church as well as President of the congregation, later moving to Christ Lutheran Church. He also was President of the Bexar County Detention Ministries Board where he helped in the creation of the Mothers and their Children Program.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Gladys Wheeless; sisters, Pat Tapfer and Sally Finzer. Survivors include his first wife, Joan Wheeless; four sons, Brad Wheeless and wife, Kim, Steven Wheeless, Brian Wheeless and wife, Cindy and LtCol USAF (Ret.) Paul Wheeless and wife, Sharon. He is also survived by the love of his life, second wife, Shirley Richter Wheeless; 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Monday, February 1, 2016 at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
