Robert was born on July 10, 1954, in San Antonio, TX, at his grandmother’s house, weighing a robust 10 pounds. He departed from this world in the same city that cradled him throughout his life, San Antonio, Texas.
Robert lived a blessed life with his parents, Arturo (Sunshine) Cancino and Esperanza (Hope) Cancino, and his four brothers in the home his parents built. He shared a deep love for music with his family, playing the drums alongside his brother Rudy on the trumpet, his brother Ernie on saxophone, his brother Tudy on vocals as lead singer, and his youngest brother James as their groupie, for their band during the 70’s, The Young and Free Band. A slender, tall, and intelligent young man, Robert graduated from Edgewood High School and pursued higher education at South West Texas (SWT), now Texas State University-San Marcos. He was the first in his family to achieve this milestone, earning a BA in Business.
Robert enjoyed a successful 35-year career with AT&T, formerly known as Southwestern Bell, retiring on October 31, 2012. His professional life was notable, but it was his passion for fishing that truly defined his "play time." Whether in fresh water or salt water, Robert cherished fishing trips, finding solitude and a deep connection with God during these moments. His nieces, nephews, brothers, parents, colleagues, neighbors, friends, former band members, and his long- time partner, along with their beloved chihuahua, all loved Robert dearly.
Robert is survived by his mother, Esperanza (Hope) Cancino, and his brothers: Arthur (Tudy) Cancino Jr., Ernesto (Ernest) Cancino, and Jaime (James) Cancino. He was a beloved uncle to twelve nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, Arturo (Sunshine) Cancino Sr., his younger brother, Rudolpho (Rudy) Cancino, his paternal grandparents, Roberto and Emerenciana Cancino, and his maternal grandparents, Jose and Guadalupe Barrientes, as well as his cherished chihuahua, his best friend and companion.
Robert was an intelligent and loving son. His talent for drumming and his love for fishing showcased his patience, forethought, and the balance he maintained between the tame and the wild aspects of life. He was the best drummer in San Antonio, TX, and will be remembered for his unique personality and the joy he brought to those around him.
A Bible verse that beautifully reflects Robert's life of solitude and inner peace is Philippians 4:6-7: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." This verse encapsulates the serenity and strength Robert found in his solitary moments, connecting deeply with nature and his faith.
The family appreciates your thoughts and prayers during this time of mourning and remembrance.
