

Former San Antonio resident Rodolfo M. Viray, Jr., 68, died of cancer 19 June 2013, at Vitas Hospice Care in San Antonio, Texas. Mr. Viray was born 19 January 1945, in the Phillippines to Rodolfo Sr. and Milagros M. Viray. He graduated from Killeen High School. He married Norma Garcia 46 years ago in San Antonio, Texas, and then traveled the world. He came to San Antonio in the 1980s after retiring from the U.S. Army as a Staff Sergeant. SSG Viray was a Vietnam Veteran serving under the Big Red One earning a Purple Heart and Army Commendation Medal with Valor. After serving 21 years in the Army as a Tanker and Drill Sergeant, he started another 20 year career as an US Civil Service employee at Camp Stanley, Texas. In retirement, he enjoyed fishing at Corpus Christi and Braunig Lake and hunting at his ranch. As a grandfather he cherished every moment with his four grandchildren. He was quoted as saying, “Whatever you do-- take care of your family.” He is survived by his mother, Milagros, of Tacoma, WA; wife, Norma, of S.A.; son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Cindy, of S.A.; daughter, Dianna, of S.A.; grandchildren, DJ, Zachery, Kimberly, and Justin; brothers, Rolando, Reynaldo, and Ruben of Tacoma, WA, and sisters, Doris and Carol of Tacoma, WA.
A rosary service will be held at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio, Texas. He will also receive full military burial honors at FT Sam Houston National Cemetery at a later date.
