She fought for almost a year, a challenging battle against Stage IV non-smoking lung, bone, and brain cancer.
She was born in San Antonio, Texas, on August 8, 1942, and was the eldest daughter of Bertha C. Gonzalez and the late Congressman Henry B. Gonzalez. Rose Mary retired in 2005 after thirty-seven years of elementary school teaching at Neal Elementary and later at Quail Valley Elementary in Missouri City.
She graduated from Providence High School in 1961, Our Lady of the Lake University in 1965, with a Bachelors of Education, and the University of Houston in 1992, with a Masters of Education. Rose Mary married Jesus Ramos, Jr. from Laredo, Texas shortly after graduating in 1965 and proceeded to raise a family.
She had two beautiful daughters, Rebecca and Veronica; two grandsons, Quentin and Caleb and was deeply involved with her family which was quite large since she had seven brothers and sisters. Rose Mary always continued to teach and help others.
She volunteered for countless organizations and was the past President and charter member of the Texas Democratic Women of Fort Bend County; member of the Fort Bend Harris Retired Educator's Association; and a member of Texas State Teachers Association. In her later teaching years she contributed to more than 100 charities.
Whether it was helping the Katrina victims or the Habitat for Humanity, there was never a needy group or purpose that she did not have time to support. Her life was truly fulfilled and she enriched the lives of so many. Everyone she met was always touched by her presence, and like her father, Congressman Henry B. Gonzalez, she was a public servant. She will be deeply missed by all.
Rose Mary is survived by her husband, Jesus Ramos, Jr.; her two daughters, Rebecca A. Young and Veronica A. Juarez; two grandchildren, Quentin Alejandro Juarez and Caleb Benjamin Juarez; her mother, widow of Congressman Henry B. Gonzalez, Bertha C. Gonzalez; and her seven siblings, Henry B. Gonzalez, Jr., the Honorable Charles A. Gonzalez, Bertha A. Denzer, Stephen J. Gonzalez, Genevieve I. Barto, Frank E. Gonzalez, and Anna M. Ihle, and their families.
