From humble beginnings in Minnesota during the Great Depression, Jim Broughton rose to become a loving husband, a great father, a phenomenal pilot, and an extraordinary safety engineer.
Enlisting as an Aviation Mechanic in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942, Jim was commissioned in 1944 as Second Lieutenant and served as an Army Air Corps pilot throughout the Pacific Theater, including service in Papua New Guinea, Australia, Guadalcanal, the Philippines, and Japan. Jim continued after the war as a pilot with the newly-formed U.S. Air Force, serving in the European Occupation, Korea, the Continental U.S., Vietnam, and Hawaii.
Flying 27 different aircraft during his career, Jim became a Flight Safety Officer in 1953 and rose to become the Director of Safety for the U.S. Air Force in 1973. Jim became a Master Command Pilot and was awarded three Legions of Merit, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, the Bronze Star Air Medal, and the Air Medal over his 32 year career.
Jim married the love of his life, Carol, in 1970 while stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii. After retiring from the U.S. Air Force in 1974, Jim worked with Northrup and TRW as an Industrial Safety Engineer. Jim’s work took Carol and their son, Ryan, to live in Tehran, Iran, for two years while Jim served as the Director of Safety for the Royal Iranian Air Force.
After working in Iran, Jim, Carol, and Ryan settled in Austin, Texas. Jim continued to work as an Industrial Safety Engineer for many more years. Jim’s love of travel took him to over 100 countries, including circumnavigation of the globe in 2008.
Jim passed away ten days after a trip to Honolulu, Hawaii, as part of an extended celebration of his 45 years of marriage to Carol. Jim and Carol were accompanied by his son, Ryan, and his daughter-in-law, Rachel, who married in Honolulu in 2010. Jim excelled at everything he did in his life and left a legacy of which we are all proud.Arrangements under the direction of Sunset North Funeral Home, San Antonio, TX.
