After a brief illness, Rudy Daniel Guerrero, 68, of San Antonio, TX, passed away peacefully in the early hours of Friday, May 3, 2024, surrounded by his beloved family and dear friends. Born on September 25, 1955 in Grand Forks, North Dakota, Rudy was predeceased by his parents, Cidelia F. Guerrero and Simon G. Guerrero. He is survived by his sisters, Virginia R. Gaeta and Rosie Mercado and his nieces and nephews.
An extraordinary make-up artist by trade, Rudy attended Johnson Beauty School and Paul Mitchell’s Instructor Institute and worked many years in San Antonio at the Majestic Theatre, Foxy Lady salon, Regency Beauty Institute and San Antonio’s Barber College before reaching the height of his profession where he worked on “The Phantom of the Opera” (Music Box tour, North American tour and the Swedish production), the “Les Miserables” National Tour, Cirque du Soleil’s “Wintuk,” and most recently on the “Frozen” National Tour. Not only did Rudy personally transform the lead actors into the title character of “The Phantom of the Opera” for over 15 years, but he also was a mentor, parent, custodian, gatekeeper, psychologist, coach, teacher, encourager, confidant, and friend to each of them - and to the rest of all of his casts and co-workers.
Spending so much time “on the road” took him away from San Antonio and his family but allowed him to travel the world where he became a collector of treasures: sparkling objects (beads, textiles, etc.), fine furnishings (furniture, art, etc.), and many, MANY friends who became his tour family. They lavished upon him great respect, affection, love and admiration that he wore with the grace, style and humility that was uniquely “Rudy.” He was the greatest of all the treasures. Those who were fortunate enough to know him will never forget his sparkling wit, the impish gleam in his eyes, his warm, radiant smile, his calling everyone “Honey,” his legendary Halloween costumes, and his many loves: Bob Evans biscuits and gravy, Blanco Cafe tacos, Baskin-Robbins chocolate chip ice cream, Roller Coasters, Drag, Movies, and family: both blood and chosen. As we say goodbye to our dear Rudy, we celebrate his colorful, bejeweled life lived, truly, to the fullest - and always wrapped in cashmere.
