Sallie Ann Ragsdill Spalding was born on January 11, 1931, in Austin, TX and entered eternal rest with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on May 27, 2024 in San Antonio, TX. Sallie is preceded in death by her cherished husband, Graham P. “Pick” Spalding, her beloved son, Michael C. Spalding and her dear parents, Walter and Lenore Ragsdill. Sallie is survived by her loving daughter, Amy Lenore Davis, (Don), her devoted grandson, Christopher L. Spalding (Sarah), her wonderful brother, Jack E. Ragsdill (Caroline) and many greatly-loved nieces, nephews, great-nieces/nephews, great-great-nieces/nephews, cousins and friends.
In the summer of 1949, while visiting her aunt in San Antonio, Sallie met the love of her life, Graham P. “Pick” Spalding. The two sweethearts became husband and wife in 1952 and shared 57 treasured years together. Sallie and Pick shared a love of God, parenting, grand-parenting, gardening, dancing, hunting, fishing, cooking and family gatherings surrounded by fellowship, laughter, love and delicious food; especially, Sallie’s deviled eggs!!
Sallie’s heritage is deeply rooted in Texas and includes founding families of the Lone Star State. She inherited a love and talent for gardening…considered to have ten green thumbs! Like her mother, Sallie won numerous awards for her floral arrangements presented at the Austin Garden Club competitions. Upon moving to San Antonio in 1968, the Spalding family became active in St. Pius X Catholic Church where Sallie bloomed as a member of the Gibbons Literary Club, PCCW Service Guild and the Bereavement Ministry. Alongside dear friends, Sallie tirelessly provided beautiful table settings, flower arrangements, refreshments and compassion to weary mourners, like us.
As a valued elementary school secretary, Sallie could simultaneously type, answer phones, greet visitors and console an upset child. Despite injury or reprimand, students considered it a pleasure to be sent to the office, because Mrs. Spalding and her hugs would be there.
Whether we knew her as Mom, MiMi, Aunt Sallie, Sallie Ann, or Amiga, our lives were richly blessed by this lovely Southern lady…a woman of strength, faith, perseverance, thoughtfulness, as well as, provider of endless hugs and kisses, a.k.a. Sugar!
Mom, we all agree to carry on your loving traditions!
