Samuel was born on February 17, 1940, in Poteet, Texas, to Dolores Medrano and Jose Hernandez. After graduating from Burbank High School, Samuel proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, an experience that shaped his strong sense of discipline, duty, and pride—values he carried throughout his life. Samuel was a beloved husband, father, and PoPo.
In 1995, after years of hard work and dedication to his community, Samuel opened School Shoes Unlimited, a retail store in San Antonio that quickly became a trusted destination for families seeking quality school footwear for children of all ages. For 25 years, he served countless families, always with a smile and genuine care, before retiring in 2020.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife of 55 years, Joan Hernandez; and his daughter, Teresa Shaw.
Samuel’s legacy continues through his loving family. He is survived by his children, Debbie Murphy, Michele Mangum, Sammy (Joey) Hernandez, and wife (Yamy), 12 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews who were dear to his heart. His warmth, dedication, and sense of humor will be remembered by all who knew him.
