

Sam attended J.J. Pershing Elementary, R.W. Emerson Junior High and Highlands High School. He didn’t complete high school, so he got his GED and then later attended San Antonio College. His first job was at Playland Park as a roller coaster operator which led to his love for riding roller coasters. He was a member of the American Coaster Enthusiasts (ACE) for many years and traveled around the country to ride. During the military draft, Sam volunteered for the U.S. Marine Corp. He was a combat veteran and served in Vietnam and was awarded 2 purple hearts. He was Honorably discharged in 1970, and was a current member of the Delta 1/7th Marines. Sam was employed by the U.S. Postal Service and retired as a supervisor in 2007 with 30 years of service. He was a member of the National Association of Postal Supervisors (NAPS) from 1987 to 2007. Sam had a love for baseball as a young boy and played with the Little League and again on a Post Office team as an adult. He was an Astros fan and also a Spurs fan. His favorite music included Elvis, The Beatles, other 60's music, and he also acquired a joy for jazz music from his wife. Sam loved going to the beach and traveling with his wife, spending time together and with family, and going out with their friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Bessie Hughes. Sam is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Cindy Aguilar Hughes; his daughters, Sarah Hughes, Robyn Cervantes (Eric) and Stefanie Davidow (Will); grandchildren, Brandi Hughes, Kara Hughes, Layla Cervantes, Rome Cervantes and Olivia Davidow; his sister Mary Zimostrad (Jerry), brothers Anthony Hughes (Kathy) and Michael Hughes (Melissa), his Aguilar family sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends who mourn his passing.
