Sandra was born on November 5, 1934, in the tiny town of Ranger, Texas, to Dola and Clayton Hunt. During her childhood, the family lived in several places before finally settling in Houston, where they became active members of Melrose Baptist Church. Sandra graduated from Reagan High School and later attended both Baylor University and Rice University.
She possessed incredible musical talent. Sandra began piano lessons at age 12 and soon started accompanying her father when he played the trombone or sang in church. They performed nearly every hymn imaginable, with “The Holy City” being among the most beautiful. By age 16, Sandra was already serving as a church pianist. She had the rare ability to play anything by ear and read sheet music. In addition to her gift for piano, Sandra had a beautiful soprano voice. A favorite among those who heard her sing was “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” Her music brought joy to everyone around her.
In 1958, Sandra married John Blair O’Meara, and together they had three daughters: Allison, Kelly, and Laurie. Sandra was a loving, caring, and nurturing mother, known for her remarkable sense of humor—something she inherited from her father. She had the rare gift of being able to laugh at herself and find joy in life’s small moments.
Sandra loved family vacations to Lake Travis, Wimberley, Dripping Springs, and Surfside. She was an avid and accomplished bridge player and enjoyed playing 42 with the family. Professionally, she worked in banking and served as Vice President of SBA lending before retiring.
A devoted member of Tallowood Baptist Church, Sandra sang in the choir for several years and later became the pianist for her Sunday school department. After retiring, she continued to share her talents by volunteering as a pianist in various nursing homes, saying she wanted to “give back with the musical talent that God gave me.”
Even in her final moments, Sandra was singing hymns as she peacefully passed from our world to His.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clayton and Dola Hunt; her sister, Betsy Campbell; and her ex-husband and lifelong best friend, John O’Meara. She is survived by her daughters: Allison Wheeler (Tony), Kelly O’Meara (Brian), and Laurie O’Meara (Ceci); her grandsons, Brad Wheeler and Tanner O’Meara; and many nieces and nephews whom she loved with all her heart.
A Memorial service will be held in the chapel at Tallowood Baptist Church, located at 555 Tallowood Drive in Houston on Saturday, May 31 at 11:00 a.m.
