Scottie (Billie) Bridges departed this earth Thursday evening January 7, 2021 in San Antonio, Texas at the age of 98. She was born in Mineral Springs, Arkansas on March 15, 1922. She is certainly annoyed that the Covid-19 virus kept her from sprinting through the century mark tape.
She will instead be reunited with those who predeceased her including her parents, Albert and Annie Grimes; sister Lina Mae Hill; sister Dean Avgerenos; husband George Metzenthin; and husband John Bridges, whom she married in 1982 after George’s death in 1976.
She is survived by son Steve Metzenthin and his wife Kelli of Sugar Land; daughter Leah Coyne and her husband Mike of Boerne; grandson Dillon Coyne of Boerne; and grandson Daniel Metzenthin of Houston.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staff at Blue Skies of Texas whose kind attention to her needs over the last several years was so valuable to her well-being.
Billie was a unique personality best viewed sometimes as an actor in a sitcom. She was always dressed to the nines, intelligent, witty, and talented in many ways: she wrote, cooked, and sang beautifully. She read books and the San Antonio Express every day until her last week and could discuss current events with you. She wasn’t, however, overly sensitive to your opinions if they differed from hers. She pulled herself up from the poverty of her youth and made a wonderful life for herself. She was a survivor and that is her legacy.
Private graveside ceremonies will be held at Fort Sam Houston.
The family requests that memorial gifts in her honor be made to the Air Force Widows’ Fund at Air Force Village Charitable Foundation by emailing [email protected], calling (210) 568-3206, or clicking here: https://www.blueskiesoftexas.org/giving/donate/
