He served in the Air Cavalry Division during Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal for aerial combat, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, The National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Gallantry Cross Medal, and many others. He joined the army at 18 and travelled the world, met his wife and grew a wonderful family. While in the Army he and his family were stationed in Korea, Germany, New Jersey, Hawaii, Alaska, Maryland, and Massachusetts before settling down in Texas. He spent much of his career in the infantry and food service. Vance was a brave, kind, loving, understanding and supportive husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. His greatest joy was his family whom he loved very much. They meant more to him than anything in the world, something he proudly and often mentioned. Vance was his familys biggest supporter in any activity they were involved with, especially his grandsons. He enjoyed attending their events, talking with them about their futures, and helping guide and support them on their journeys. He seemed to always have a plan and was involved to get them where they wanted to go. Vances second love and passion was the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He loved spending time out at his property and hunting with his son, grandsons and nephew. One of his favorite shirts read "If you want me to listen to you, then talk about hunting." His love for hunting and fishing will be carried on by his family for many generations to come. Vance will always be remembered as one of the most kind, generous, loving souls that ever was. His love was unconditional, there was nothing he wouldn't do for his family and friends. Conversations with him were the type that could go on forever, and the stories he told of life, hardships, the triumphs, and the many adventures were the type that you could listen to over and over again. He found so much love and passion for life and family. His beautiful blue eyes and infectious smile will live on forever. He will truly be missed by all that knew him. Visitation will be held on December 2, 2021 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM with memorial service on December 3, 2021 from 9:00 to 10:00 AM at Porter Loring Mortuary North, 2102 North Loop 1604 East, San Antonio TX 78232. As we look back over time We find ourselves wondering Did we remember to thank you enough For all you have done for us? For all the times you were by our sides To help and support us To celebrate our successes To understand our problems And accept our defeats? Or for teaching us by your example, The value of hard work, good judgment, Courage and integrity? We wonder if we ever thanked you For the sacrifices you made. To let us have the very best? And for the simple things Like laughter, smiles and times we share? If we have forgotten to show our Gratitude enough for all the Things you did, were thanking you now. And we are hoping you knew all along, How much you meant to us.
