

Our beloved Shirley went home to be with Lord on March 23, 2016. Shirley was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Her loving personality and warmth will be truly missed by all who have been blessed with her friendship.
Shirley Yvonne McCutcheon was born on August 26, 1926 in the city of Bayside, Texas, a small community across from Corpus Christi, Texas. Shirley loved living and growing up by the bay. She attended school in Woodsboro, Texas where being a dedicated student; she consistently made the honor role. Shirley continued her education by graduating from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Romantic Languages and Education. She received a number of academic scholarships and worked as a Librarian in the School of Architecture to pay for college. Shirley graduated Summa Cum Laude and received many other awards.
Shirley was voted sweetheart of the School of Architecture and presided at the Annual Fine Arts Ball. She was also chosen to be one of the Bluebonnet Belles of the University. It was while she was working in the Library that she met fellow student, Winston Martin. They fell in love and were married June 15, 1949. Winston often said, "it was the best decision of his life."
Shirley taught school in Austin for a year while Winston completed college. The couple then moved to San Antonio, Texas.
Shirley taught school for a time in a low income area of the city. It was the beginning of a lifetime commitment to helping disadvantaged children.
During their 64 years of marriage Shirley was a devoted wife. Shirley loved being a mother to her three children. She adored her two grandsons. Her four great grandchildren were the best part of life. She was very active in all of their lives.
Shirley grew up in a Christian home. She loved the Lord and was an active member of Trinity Baptist Church. One of her greatest joys was the fellowship with her many friends in her Sunday School class. She was also a life-long member of the Discimus Study Club. Now she has gone home to be with the Lord.
She is survived by her sons: M. Gary Martin (wife – Janet), Winston A. Martin (wife – Fran), Grandsons: Gary, Jr. (wife – Charly) and Chris (wife – Shawn). Great grandchildren: Emmalee Jean, Avery Claire, Beau Michael and Brett Alan. For 89 years we have been blessed by Shirley's life. Her family and friends are in great sorrow but are comforted in knowing we will be with her again in God's Heaven.
A memorial service will be held Saturday March 26th at 11:00 AM at Trinity Baptist church at 319 E. Mulberry.
A private burial service will be held at His Hill Cemetery in Comfort, Texas that afternoon.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity Baptist Church or Torchbearers in Comfort, Texas.
