

Shirley Rose (Smith) Stone was born on December 16, 1931, in Muskogee, Oklahoma to parents, LaRose and Herbert Smith. She passed away on Monday, February 9, 2026, at the age of 94 in San Antonio, Texas.
Shirley’s family moved to Texas when she was an infant. She lived and attended school in San Antonio, graduating from Breckenridge High School in 1948. From there she attended Southwest Texas State Teacher’s College before marrying USAF Sgt James E Stone on Valentine’s Day 1952. They grew their family to 4 while traveling the country with the Air Force for the next 20 years before returning to San Antonio for retirement. Shirley was a longtime devoted member of First Baptist Church San Antonio. She was involved in several ministries, from teaching young adults to Southeast Asian refugee assistance. She consistently shared her love for Jesus and music with her children, grandchildren and all who knew her.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and her loving husband of 71 years, James E. Stone. She is survived by her children, Rondi Stone and husband Ken Northum, Jim Stone and wife Debbie; grandchildren, Matthew Miller, Aaron Miller, Christopher Stone, LeeAnne Arnold and Zachary Barber; great-grandchildren, Caiden Miller, James Miller, and Ada Arnold, Mars Barber and McQueen Barber, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members and friends.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2026, from 12:30 pm to 1:00 pm at Porter Loring Mortuary, 1101 McCullough Ave, San Antonio, TX 78212. The funeral service will follow beginning at 1:00 pm.
Pastor Scott R. Lane will officiate.
Shirley will be laid to rest with her husband at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery during a private ceremony at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church San Antonio.
