

Dr. Sidney L. Miller, 94, passed into eternal rest May 28, 2008, with his family by his side. A loving husband and wonderful, precious father and grandfather was born Dec. 13, 1913, to Pauline and Harry Miller, in Brooklyn, NY. After earning a B.S. degree cum laude from the College of the City of NY in 1934, and a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Columbia University in 1933, he completed a dental internship at Montefiore Hospital for Chronic Diseases in New York City. From there he embarked upon a life pattern that led to four separate careers-military, private practice, public health, and education. He began a dental private practice in New York City before being called to active duty in the U.S. Army in 1941 and served through WWII in the Pacific Theater, separating from military service in 1946 as a Captain. He returned to the private practice of dentistry- 3 years in New York City and 9 years in Westfield, NY- until 1957, when he accepted an appointment as State Dental Director of the State of Alabama. He returned to school and earned a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Michigan in 1958. In 1961 he was appointed Regional Dental Director of the State of Georgia Department of Health. In 1964 he was appointed Consultant in Dental Services for Children with the Children's Bureau, Department of Labor, HEW, in Washington, DC. In 1966 he accepted appointment as Associate Professor of Dentistry at the University of Alabama, and in 1971 joined the young faculty at the newly formed dental school at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Community Dentistry, and continued there until his retirement in 1983. He was also appointed Dean of the School of Dental Hygeine. Scholastic honors earned include election to Phi Beta Kappa, Delta Omega, and Omicron Delta Upsilon. He authored numerous scientific reports and studies, and two textbooks, Legal Aspects of Dentistry, and Introductory Biostatistics for Medicine and Dentistry. He was a Fellow of the American College of Dentists and a Diplomat of the American Board of Dental Public Health. Dr. Miller was a life member of the San Antonio Dental Society, the Texas State Dental Association, the American Dental Association, the American College of Dentists and the American Association of Public Health Dentists. Upon retirement from UTHSC-SA he became involved with Kiwanis and participated in their many charitable activities, volunteered with the Salvation Army and Audie Murphy Veterans Hospital, and served as a liaison with foreign exchange students and local residents. Hobbies included philatelics, stained glass working and woodworking, and golf. He volunteered for many years at the Texas Open and Senior PGA events. He was a member of the Windcrest Golf Club for many years. Dr. Miller was a 32 Mason. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, "the prettiest girl he ever saw," Louise Perkins Miller, formerly of Elba, AL; daughter, Lucinda Luci Miller Pitman and husband, Benjamin F. "Pody" Pittman III of San Antonio; son, Dr. Howard G. Miller and wife, Patty of Huntsville, AL; grandchildren, Jenevieve Pitman Zoch and husband, Frank of San Antonio, TX; Jessica Suggs Koch and husband, Jon of San Antonio, TX; Emory Olzinski and wife, Shelly of Virginia Beach, VA; Rachel Miller Glynn and husband, Peter of Tampa Bay, FL; Melissa Miller Gilbert and husband, Josh of Birmingham, AL; Meredith Miller and Mandee Miller of Huntsville, AL; five great grandchildren; and his sister, Jeanette Weinstein of Brooklyn, NY; nephew, Dr. Ivan Weinstein of Greenwich, CT. He was preceded in death by his son, Dr. George D. Miller of Gadsden, AL. Dr. Miller is indebted to his friend and personal physician of many years, Dr. Stephen Cohen, and his competent and caring staff for the care and wonderful service they provided during his retirement years. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008, at Porter Loring Funeral Home on McCullough Ave. from 6:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. Dr. Miller will be forever in our hearts.
