Simon Contreras Andrade was born November 28, 1926 in San Antonio. He didn’t really know his mother, as she died when he was three. His father worked as a cement finisher for the city of San Antonio, but lost his job during the Great Depression. They became migrant farm workers, picking cotton throughout Texas and Mississippi. He remembered eating barbecue in Mississippi when Max Schmeling beat Joe Louis in 1936. His father died when he was 13, and orphaned, he took various jobs to support himself. Working as a film projectionist at Teatro Nacional, he met Josefina Ramirez. They married and had seven children. Together, they gave them the loving and stable family life he never had. Also a WWII veteran, he went to two different trade schools on the G.I. Bill. He spent his career as an airplane mechanic at Kelly Air Force Base. With his difficult childhood, you would think he was bitter and angry, but he was the kindest and most compassionate person you ever met. He is survived by his loving wife, Josefina; 7 children and spouses; Guadalupe and Philip Barragan, Richard and Esther Andrade, Armando and Mona Andrade, Rose and Luis R. Vera Jr., Josie and David Lopez, Simon and Debbie Andrade, Diane and Kerry Overmiller; 24 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild. The Visitation will be held Thursday, September 22, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Trevino Funeral Home, 226 Cupples Rd. with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Procession will depart from the funeral home at 10:00 a.m. for a 10:30 a.m. Service at House of Prayer Church, 2911 Gunsmoke, San Antonio, TX 78227. Entombment will follow in San Fernando Cemetery No.2.
