

She was born October 1, 1923, in Cuba, to Antonio and Zoila Nuñez.
Sofia was the proud founder and Director of the Excelsior Academy in Havana, Cuba. She had a Doctorate Degree in Philosophy and Educational Psychology from The University of Havana and later earned a Masters Degree from Ball State University.
She and her family came to the United States as political refugees in 1962. The family was sponsored by Epworth Methodist Church in Bluffton, Indiana, where Sofia continued her teaching career at Bluffton High School and Snider High School. Sofia was named State of Indiana Teacher of the Year in 1982. She retired in 1984, and enjoyed her later years of life with her beloved husband.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and beloved husband, Federico Rodriguez del Portillo.
Sofia is survived by her daughters, Alina Alfonso and husband, Reni, and Alicia Rodriguez Bower both of Miami, and Aleida Allen and husband, Randy of San Antonio; 8 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.
