Stephen “Lewis” Whitman passed away on June 14, 2023. He was the oldest son of Steve Charles Whitman and Dora Estelle Whitman (nee Bradfute), and was born in Normanna, TX where his father worked as the Railroad Section Foreman. Along with his four sisters and one brother, the family moved along the railroad to different sections in South Texas.
After graduating from school in Benbolt, TX at the age of 16, Lewis moved to Houston, TX to live with an older sister. He began working for the Southern Pacific Railroad Office where he met his future wife, Florence “Flo” Irene Schlobohm. Lewis enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1947 and then transferred to the U.S. Air Force later that year. Lewis and Florence married on February 17, 1952 and welcomed three children: Chris D. Whitman, Thomas V. Whitman and Paula M. Whitman.
During Lewis’ military career of 23 years, serving as an Air Force Attaché to four star Generals, the family moved all over the world. He was a proud Veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
After retiring from the U.S. Air Force in 1972 in San Antonio, TX, Lewis began working as an Orderly at Methodist Hospital while earning his Associate’s Degree as one of the first male Registered Nurses in 1975. Lewis continued to travel around Texas, working as an RN at various hospitals in the Critical Care Units. Following an additional 18 years working as an RN, he fully retired in 1993 to care for his ailing wife at home who sadly passed away September 27, 1995.
For the remaining 28 years of his life, Lewis enjoyed a well-deserved retirement, but continued to help and support his family without hesitation when needed.
Lewis was preceded in death by all of his siblings except for his youngest sister.
He is survived by his three children, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., Monday, June 26, 2023, at Porter Loring Mortuary.
