Sue Majure passed away peacefully November 28, 2012. She was born May 15, 1920 in Crystal Springs, Mississippi, to parents, Herbert and Ruth Kemp. She grew up in the Baptist church, but became a devout and committed Episcopalian.
Sue married Al Majure before finishing college and for many years lived the life of a military wife. She attended college wherever Al was stationed until she completed her degree. She became an elementary school teacher in the Philippine Islands and after coming to San Antonio she continued her career in teaching. After 32 years of teaching she retired and was active in an organization of retired teachers known as Flamingos.
Sue was instrumental in the formation of St. Thomas Episcopal Church. It was at a bridge party that the idea sprang to life after she realized most of the guests in attendance were Episcopalians and that there was no Episcopal church in north-central San Antonio. As St. Thomas church took root and began to grow, Sue was there. She was on the altar guild, she made altar linens, she made a chausible and the funeral pall which is still in use. Sue was a Steven’s minister, was on the vestry, was a member of the ECW, and sang in the choir. She taught Sunday school, helped in the children’s chapel and gardened around the new building. Sue also helped design and construct the costumes for the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas that the choir presented each year. Sue became a charter member of the Epiphany Chapter of Daughters of the King.
Sue Majure’s gifts of love and hospitality have been a blessing to the people of St. Thomas Episcopal Church and to her loving family and many friends.
Sue is preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband of 22 years Albert Majure and her sister, Dorothy Shoemake. Sue leaves behind to cherish her memory her son David Spaugh and his wife Rhonda and their sons Colton and Conagher; her many nieces and nephews to whom she was deeply devoted; her many dear friends who found it a blessing to have her in their lives.
Sue spread the love of God into the life of her church, her family and many friends, and she will be deeply missed by all that knew and loved her.
A memorial service to celebrate Sue’s life will be held Friday, December 7, 2012 at 1PM at St. Thomas Episcopal Church.
