

He graduated from Jefferson High School at the age of 15; attended San Antonio College and Texas A&M, earned his BBA degree from the University of Texas where he met Glenda Lauterstein. After their marriage in 1948, he earned his law degree from St. Mary's University. He was an Assistant District Attorney for four years and began his law practice in his father's firm.
He served as Vice President of San Antonio Heart Association, as well as serving on the State Board of the American Heart Association. He was President and National Board member of various organizations including the U.S.O., Jewish Family Service, the B'nai Brith Lodge, Golden Manor Home, Community Relations Council, the Jewish Federation and Temple Beth-El.In addition to his community activities, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend; and for 42 years loved the practice of law.
Sylvan is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Glenda Alter; his children: Lisa Abramson and husband, Phillip, of San Antonio, Texas; Dr. Larry Alter and wife, Randi of Irving, Texas; Nancy Graff and husband, Ephraim, of Tampa, Florida and William Alter and wife, Bobbie of Lafayette, Indiana; grandchildren: David Abramson and wife, Lisa; Josh Abramson and wife, Lynn; Jennifer Alter, Matthew Alter, Adrian Graff, Elena Graff, Jonathan Graff and Lori Alter; and his brother, Nelson Alter and wife, Shirley of Beaumont, Texas.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Golden Manor for the eight years of loving care and kindness; and to Mr. Frank Sanchez, Dr. Jerry Winakur and Dr. Michael Lichtenstein for their devoted care toward Sylvan.
On Monday, September 17th, a service will be held at 10:00 A.M. at Temple Beth-El Wulfe Sanctuary with a graaveside service to follow at Beth-El Memorial Gardens on Austin Hwy.
