After graduating from high school in 1972, Teresa enlisted in the Air Force. She was stationed at Lackland Air Force Base for basic training, then went to Sheppard AFB for job training. Upon completion of training, she arranged to be reassigned to Lackland AFB where she had met her future husband, John McCombs, during her previous assignment there. On August 3rd, 1973, she and John were married, and spent 53 years together until her passing.
After completing her Air Force enlistment, Teresa traveled with John to his Air Force assignments in Portugal and Abilene, Texas and pursued her education. During May 1983, she graduated from Hardin Simmons University in Abilene with a BBA degree in accounting. She graduated SUMMA cum laude with a perfect 4.0 Grade Point Average. Because of her GPA, her entire degree was paid for by the university.
After earning her degree, Teresa worked for the Arthur Young accounting firm in Abilene, until John was reassigned to San Antonio. After returning to San Antonio, Teresa worked for the University Health System as a staff accountant. She retired from that job in 2009.
Teresa was a kind and loving wife and mother. She found strength in God and had a beautiful smile. Her favorite activities were hobby-related shopping with her best friend Barbara, watching music and animal-related videos with John, and collecting bird and owl-themed clothing and figurines. Over the years, she amassed a large collection of Cherished Teddies figurines and enjoyed arranging and displaying them. She loved reading and solving crossword puzzles. She also enjoyed traveling and camping in the family’s RV. She had a great love of animals and nature, and backyard bird watching was a pastime she shared with her daughter. She also loved to watch the San Antonio Spurs' games with her son.
In 1990, Teresa was diagnosed with cancer but was successfully treated and able to continue working until her retirement. In early 2022, she was diagnosed with advanced dementia and was cared for by John until she passed. Even through the toughest times of her illness, she stayed strong and always had a smile for her family.
She is survived by her beloved husband, John McCombs; her children, Renee (Christopher) Villareal, and Matthew McCombs; her sister Trudy (Michael) Saleno, and her brother Tim Wilcox.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Kendal and Mary Lou Wilcox.
Her family will have a public viewing in celebration of her life on Thursday, September 4th, 2025, at Porter Loring Mortuary West, 1710 W Loop 1604 N, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
Contributions in her memory may be made to the San Antonio Humane Society at 4804 Fredericksburg Rd, San Antonio, TX, 78229.
