

The Reverend Doctor Philip Justice Taylor, Jr., of Boerne, Texas, died June 28, 2017. Born in Philadelphia, PA, Phil served as a priest in the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas for forty years before his retirement six years ago. Phil graduated from Chestnut Hill Academy in Philadelphia, PA, and went on to earn degrees from Parsons College, Fairfield, IA; Philadelphia Divinity School, Philadelphia, PA; and McCormick Theological Seminary, Chicago, IL, where he was a student of Bob Boling.
Phil was preceded in death by his parents, Philip Justice and Jeannette Taylor, and his grandsons, Samuel Taylor Axsom and Vance Oliver Taylor. He is survived by his wife, Helen Eddy Taylor, his daughter Sarah Taylor Axsom and husband Ken of San Antonio, son Philip Justice Taylor, III and wife Peg of Wilmington, DE and son Jonathan Eddy Taylor and wife April of Austin, as well as his six grandchildren: Max, Ben and Will Axsom of San Antonio and Emma, Presley and Garrett Taylor of Austin and his sister, Pamela Taylor Willard of Alexandria, Virginia.
Phil was ordained in 1971 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in San Antonio, where he began his ministry in Texas. He was Rector of the Church of our Savior in Aransas Pass and of Trinity by the Sea in Port Aransas. As Associate Rector of St. David's in San Antonio, Phil sponsored the EYC Youth Groups and the Saturday morning Exceptional Adults group. Later he served as Rector of All Saints' in Pleasanton, St. Matthias' in Devine, Trinity Episcopal in Junction, Calvary Episcopal in Menard and Saint Andrew's by the Sea in Port Isabel, from which he retired in 2010.
Phil was active throughout his career in community organizations. He was a founding member of Christian Assistance Ministries (CAM) in San Antonio, counseled and worked with Planned Parenthood and SAMM Ministries, and served on the Board of Laguna Madre Habitat for Humanity. He was a member of Kiwanis in San Antonio and Rotary in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. As a member of the Heart of Texas Soaring Society he enjoyed building and flying radio control sailplanes. He was an expert woodworker. He was an audiophile, musician and recordist with a fine ear for music and a deep love of jazz idioms.
Phil brought a calm and grace-filled presence into the world and into the lives of his family and those who knew him.
