THERESA BEATRICE BAGBY-MITCHELL – was born on January 23, 1925 to Morris and Hattie (Pulliam) Bagby at Sharon General Hospital in Sharon, Pennsylvania. She would be the only child in the union between Morris and Hattie. She attended Farrell Public Schools and graduated from Farrell High School. While living in Farrell, PA, in addition to spending time with friends and shopping, Theresa spent her early years of employment at Westinghouse. She also spent time with a local social club that focused on giving back to the community. Theresa gave her life to the Lord many years ago and lived the years that followed as an example of God’s love.
Growing up in neighboring small towns, their paths were bound to cross…
After his return from WWII, Isaac “Ike” W. Mitchell Jr. asked for Theresa’s hand in marriage and the two were joined in holy matrimony October 18, 1946 in Trumbull, OH. Theresa and Ike raised 10 children who she leaves to carry on her legacy: Laura Jean Irby; Patricia Ann Cushman (Tyrone); Doris Elaine Jeffery; Karen Beth Taylor; Ingrid Jane Mitchell; Michael Anthony Davis; Marilyn Denise Lundy (Michael); Brenda Carol Hopkins; Isaac William Mitchell, III (Kara); Stephanie Lynn Crimiel (Curtis); and others she adopted as her own. There was no doubt in anyone’s mind that her children were the center of her life or that she was their everything.
Her vast legacy continues to grow through: 27 grandchildren, 70 great grandchildren and 37 great-great grandchildren.
She leaves behind her brother in-love Charles Mitchell, sister in-loves Beverly Douthit-Taylor, Grace Pleasant and Edythe Clawson, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many extended family members who were counted and included as “family”.
She served graciously as First Lady in her husband’s two pastorates in Erie, Pennsylvania and San Antonio, Texas. In her capacity as First Lady, Theresa participated in choir, taught Sunday School and worked summers with the churches vacation bible school programs.
Outside the church, Theresa took pride in her career at Southwestern Bell (now AT&T) – from which she eventually retired, as an Operator. She loved all genres of music and the arts. Two of her favorite past-times included watching movie classics and attending the Broadway Series at the Majestic Theater in San Antonio, TX where she was a season ticket holder for many years until her final curtain call.
On February 9, 2019, at the age of 94, Theresa was ushered into eternity with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ surrounded by her children and grandchildren reading bible verses and singing hymns of assurance and faith. It was an honor to know and love her and our lives are forever touched and changed for the better.
Theresa Mitchell is preceded in death by her husband - Ike, Jr., her mother - Hattie (Pulliam) Bagby, her father – Morris Bagby, mother in-love – Mary (Christman) Mitchell, father in-love Isaac W. Mitchell, Sr., 2 brother-in-loves and 5 sister in-loves.
Theresa was a woman of God without pretense or malice. She was sharp with amazing long-term memory. Although soft spoken, she was beautiful and elegant, effortlessly lighting up any room she entered. Her wit remained a part of her charm until her final days.
Theresa was the matriarch of the Mitchell family. Her life lessons of family first, family love and inclusion will live on for generations to come.
