Thomas (Tom) Baldwin, a beloved husband, father, military officer, and educator, passed away peacefully at the age of 80 surrounded by his family. Born in Victoria, Texas on September 14, 1943 to Vance and Clydine Baldwin, both educators themselves. The family eventually settled in San Antonio, where Tom graduated from Marshall High School. He went on to pursue an undergraduate education at Schreiner College and Southwest Texas State College and a Master’s degree at Ball State University.
In 1965, he answered the call of duty, embarking on a 20-year active-duty military career when he was called up by the United States Air Force – fulfilling a childhood dream of being in the military and flying in planes. His service took him across the globe, from being a squadron commander at RAF Lakenheath in England to a Missileman at F.E. Warren AFB in Cheyenne, Wyoming. He served at the B-52 base at Barksdale AFB in Bossier City, Louisiana, and with the Pacific Airborne Command at Hickam AFB in Honolulu, Hawaii, before retiring from the USAF at Randolph AFB in San Antonio, Texas.
After his military career, Tom returned to his roots in education in San Antonio. For the next 28 years, he devoted himself to teaching, becoming a Principal in Northside ISD and an Associate Superintendent with Jubilee Academic Academy.
In his leisure time, Tom enjoyed watching the Dallas Cowboys play, immersing himself in novels, attending car shows, and always seeking the perfect Corvette. His unwavering dedication to his family was evident through his loving marriage of 60 years to his wife, Shirley. Tom will be remembered fondly for his service to his country, dedication to education, and the love he shared with his family and friends.
Tom is survived by the love of his life, Shirley. He is also survived by his brother, Vance Baldwin (Patsy Baldwin); his three children, Melissa Baldwin, Melody Hogate (David Hogate), and Scott Baldwin (Tami Baldwin); 9 grandchildren, Gabi Velasco (Hannah Teicher), Mia Velasco, Sarah Sykes (Shaun Reghabi), Allison Joy, Nick Baldwin, Spencer Baldwin, Summer Baldwin, Cooper Baldwin and Jase Baldwin; and 1 great-grandchild, Mila Reghabi.
Tom’s family will host a Visitation on Thursday, October 19th from 5:00pm - 7:00pm at Porter Loring Mortuary North, 2102 North Loop 1604 East, San Antonio, TX 78232. On Friday, October 20th at 11:30am a Military Honor Service will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to The American Cancer Association or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
