Tom was born in Paris, Texas. His father was a surveyor for Gulf Oil, which had them live all across the south. Tom attended over 24 schools in 11 years. He graduated Texas Commerce College and moved to teach seventh grade English for two years in Oaklawn, Dallas, Texas. He adored his students as they did him, noted by their tracking him down after decades of good memories shared at their high school reunions; a story featured in the Dallas Morning News.
Tom joined the Air Force as a lieutenant navigator on the fleet’s largest transport plane, flying many trips to Europe over four years, ending as an instructor. After this, he moved to teach in Pasadena, Texas, soon becoming a principal at South Houston Elementary, then opening McMasters Elementary. Many of his devoted staff moved with him. He ended his career as Pasadena’s Assistant Superintendent of (over30) Elementary Schools, revolutionizing schools at the time with many choices of deserving women principals.
He met teacher Jean Lenelle Neuerburg on a blind date. They married and raised their family in Pasadena and Lake Livingston, then moved to a golfing community Country Place in Pearland, finally joining their children in San Antonio, Texas.
Tom was a talented athlete, a beautiful diver and loved to walk on his hands. He loved to create, build and fix anything, including computers, well before others did. He loved all of his family dearly.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas E. Carrell and Susan E. Holloway Carrell and sister, Jean Ann Mixon. He is survived by his wife, Jean L. Carrell; daughter, Sandra C. Tremblay (Dale) and son, Jeffrey T. Carrell; grandchildren, Carl W. Tremblay and Krista A. Tremblay along with many loving family members.
The family thanks his long time Care Giver, Irma Aguinaga, and the team at The Forum Lincoln memory care.
A family memorial will be held in the future in Jacksonville, Texas. He will be laid to rest in the Oaklawn Cemetery in Cooper, Texas.
