Lifelong San Antonian and Principal, Thomas “Tom” Andrew Mackey, age 53 passed away Thursday, March 2, 2023. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, co-workers, and school community. He was born September 19, 1969, in San Antonio, Texas. He graduated from Churchill High School in 1987 and completed his bachelor’s in history in 1992 from the University of Texas at Austin, and his master’s from Trinity University in May of 2000.
He served as a 4th and 5th grade teacher at Brauchle Elementary for 7 years in the Northside Independent School District before moving into administration. He served as Vice Principal at Burke Elementary and Principal at Fernandez Elementary prior to opening Henderson Elementary in 2010. At the time of his passing, he was one of the longest tenured elementary administrators in the district with 20 years as a principal. Tom was loved by the staff, students, and community in every school he served. “El Jefe”, as he was affectionately called, was a great listener and confidant and had a knack for making everyone around him feel like they were important.
Following years of working together, Tom married his most dedicated friend, partner and confidant, Stephanie in 2002. Having been exposed to cooking by his mother, Tom was wonderful in the kitchen and his evening routine often involved a quick trip to HEB prior to cooking a unique or experimental dish. His passion, from early in life, was Texas fishing. He spent as much time as he could at Padre Island National Seashore, and he loved chasing the white bass and hybrid striper at Medina Lake or George West. He was notorious for catching more fish than anyone else on the boat—every single time.
He is survived by Stephanie, his wife of 21 years, his six siblings: Mary, Tim, Claudia, Jane, Katherine and Jonathan, many nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as his beloved four-legged children: his dogs Bella and Blaze, his cats Sebastian, Tinkie, and his favorite kitty, Chloe. He is preceded in death by an older brother David Mackey and both his parents, Ray Walton Mackey, and Helen Bernice Breidenbach.
