

Thomas Stephen Smith, age 87, of San Antonio, Texas passed away on Monday, February 14, 2022. Tom was born July 7, 1934. At a young age, Tom was always a hard worker. He served in the Army for 3 years, from 1952 until 1955. He started working at American Can Company from 1957 until 1983. At the same time, he had a paper route that he did until 1963. Tom would get up early and throw papers and go to his second job. In 1960, he started doing upholstery out of his and Mary’s garage on Eisenhower Road. He left the Can Company in 1978 and opened his own business, Smith Upholstery Shop. Tom, being the entrepreneur that he was took up making hot tub covers years into having his upholstery business. His son David took over the upholstery business and Tom built his successful hot tub business and worked until 2007. He continued to work up until he was 83. He had a work ethic like no other.
Tom and his wife Mary were married on August 17th, 1958 and would have been married 64 years this year. Tom was an avid golfer, who played every Thursday, rain, or shine. He was a member of the Alamo Heights Optimist Club for several years. He was a handy man that could make or fix whatever he put his mind to.
He is survived by his wife Mary Smith. Daughter Sharon Plant and her husband Clint, David Smith, Danny Smith, Michelle Dickson, and her husband Rusty. Tom had several grandchildren that loved him very much. Hayley Caldwell, Shelby Sekaly, Brendan Johnson, Paige Johnson, Rebecca Smith, Rachel Smith, Reid Johnson, and Elizabeth Smith.
Thomas is preceded in passing by his father Thomas Smith, mother Margaret Lowes and sister Darlene Smith.
The family would like to give a heartfelt thank you to Amedisys Hospice Care that took care of him the last months of his life. He had loving nurses that looked forward to their visits with Tom, and he did as well.
A celebration of life for Thomas will be held Thursday, March 3, 2022, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio, TX 78218.
