He was preceded in death by his parents, Voyle V. Burns and Annie Bell Meglasson Burns as well as his brother, Vernon B. Burns, sister, Dorothy Lee Rowe, and daughter, Debra Suzanne Burns.
Tommy is survived by his wife of forty years, Sandra L. Burns; son, Tommy W. Burns, Jr. and his wife, Debbie; daughters, Arlene Falcon, Darlene Kirby, and Cynthia Lee Burns; as well as seven grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Burns was a highly respected businessman, starting his first business, Tommy Burns Painting Company, while a teenager and considered too young to have a bank account. This forced him to exaggerate his age! He also owned and operated Star Supply Company, Dreyer Vibrator Company and Tommy W. Burns Farms. Later, Tommy began commercial ranching operations in South and West Texas, and New Mexico. Never one to miss a cattle auction, he was a fine judge of livestock.
Tommy was a lifetime member of the San Antonio Livestock Exposition, Texas Cattle Feeders Association and several other business related organizations.
Those who knew his background and the story of his success through hard work admired him greatly. He has been a fine example to all whose lives have been touched by his generosity and kindness.
A long time member of Coker United Methodist Church, Tommy was an active member of the Questors Sunday School class until his stroke in 1997. Many of the people in this class became his dearest friends and continued to stay in touch with him during all of the years that he was in a nursing facility.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 27, 2010, at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
